INFORMATION & GUIDE
The Andes “Cordillera” crosses Ecuador from North to South; it is dominated by the fantastic views of Volcanoes, highland valleys and indigenous markets. Colonial Mansions converted into wonderful lodges and old haciendas that have opened their doors to visitors, several forest lodges that promise amazing views of birds and subtropical vegetation, all these will overwhelm you.
The Highlands or Andes cover an altitude range from 800m to 6310m (Chimborazo Volcano); offering a variety of fauna and flora never seen. Birdwatching is a growing sport from the foothills of the Cotopaxi and the Paso Ochoa, the Reserves of Yanacocha in the Pichincha Volcano, to the cloud forest and the National Highland Parks.
The Andean Cordillera is form of three main parts: Eastern, Inter-Andean and Western Cordilleras . The climate is rainy from October to May, but the recent volcanic activity has affected the weather and an excess of rain has been notices during these months. The Paramo from 3500m to 4500m has a dry cold climate; it has dry vegetation due to the lack of oxygen, but is ideal for the majestic Condon and the vivacious hummingbirds; other beautiful birds and mammals are found, spectacle bears and pumas might be wondering around the breathtaking Andean flora.
The Highland provinces are: Carchi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolivar, Chimborazo , Cañar, Azuay and Loja. Our tours combine visits to some of these provinces with the Amazon, Coast and Galapagos.
